How do you wash towels and keep them soft?
It might sound counterintuitive, but use less detergent. The stiff feeling is often due to a buildup of soapy residue, so less detergent means your machine will have an easier time rinsing it out. At the same time, slightly warmer water will do a better job at rinsing off detergent than cold water, and a lighter load will let your machine rinse your cotton bath towels more efficiently (the same goes for your dryer – fewer towels mean fluffier towels).
How to soften hard cotton towels?
If your cotton bath towels and hand towels are already stiff and crunchy, it’s easy to return them to soft, fluffy perfection. Next time you do a load of towels, follow the wash cycle with a rinse cycle accompanied by a cup of vinegar. This will help remove the soap build-up that makes them stiff. Alternatively, add half a cup of baking soda to your normal detergent when you next wash. This will clean without adding more soap, and will help loosen fibres. If you must use a dryer instead of a washing line, add a tennis ball or dryer ball to the machine.
Are cotton towels good for hair?
Well, that depends. Terry cloth or waffle-weave bathroom towels have a rougher texture that can cause damage to hair when you wring, squeeze or rub hair. You’re better going for a microfibre or fine-weave cotton towel, or even a cotton T-shirt, and gently squeezing or blotting hair.
