Narraweema Guesthouse is a beautiful bespoke accommodation property. We asked Benita what inspired the idea behind Narraweema.

“The house holds a very special place in the history & heart of Gloucester. Originally developed in the early 1900’s as a private residence and one of the town’s oldest houses, Narraweema was later redeveloped to serve the community as a private hospital during the 1930’s to 1950’s. With such an important story, we were passionate about restoring the property & creating a luxury space in the centre of town where travellers could come to experience the house & history.”

Benita does an exceptional job at taking care of guests, just as the property’s history once did too. Included in your stay is a daily seasonal Continental Breakfast Basket, delivered to your door to enjoy. You also have the option to add a gourmet hamper for those celebrating a birthday, anniversary - or simply to indulge!

Narraweema has a rich history, so we asked Benita to tell us a little bit about when & why the pair bought the property.

“Narraweema is over 110 years old. We purchased the property in 2021. It was love & trembling knees at first sight! Our hearts were captured but we were under no illusions about the scope of the work we’d be undertaking & how much we’d be rolling up our sleeves.”

Benita spoke of their love for the country. “Having both grown up regionally, we found ourselves like so many, living in a city for work & hankering for a return to our small-town roots. Our dream had always been to have an old building of some kind (we’d looked at old banks, old dairy’s & old mills in the past) that we could ultimately transform into guest accommodation. Finding Narraweema in a town that had romanced us with its breathtaking landscapes and friendly community was an incredible opportunity.”

Benita also noted how thankful she always will be to the previous owners who had been there since the 1980’s and sold. They too are still local to the town and have since always encouraged Benita & Martin to make the changes.

There are so many options for accommodation out there now, so when creating a space for guests it is important to stand out and love what you have to offer. Benita was happy to share what she considers vital to ensure their guests comfort and experience is front of mind.

“We’ve both travelled for work & pleasure over the years with opportunity to stay in some pretty special properties. These experiences really gave us an appreciation for quality & luxury as well as setting a benchmark for accommodation offerings which has been guided by a deep desire to create spaces where people feel deeply welcomed, rested & pampered.

To have any hope of achieving the creation of a luxury hotel experience & honouring the house, we recognised that we needed to invest in quality & pay attention to the details.”

Narraweema is filled with a beautiful selection of Eadie on display. We were curious what drew Benita to Eadie for the furnishings.

“Creating an aesthetic that was welcoming and filled with furnishings that were natural, tactile, beautiful & ethical was key. Not surprisingly, Eadie’s gorgeous local (we feel like we can almost claim Newcastle as local) offering was an easy choice. I have been specifying Eadie for my residential design projects & filling my own spaces with Eadie’s beautiful home furnishings for years, so it was a delight to be able to extend that to our guest accommodation.

It’s hard to pick a favourite piece in the accommodation but I think a linen robe really spells luxury, so I think that gets my vote - today at least!”

For anyone embarking on a trip to the stunning Gloucester, Benita has kindly offered a list of activities, restaurants and cafes she considers a MUST below:

1. Gloucester is filled with truly magical opportunities to experience some of the countries most awe-inspiring outdoors with Gloucester Tops, Gloucester Falls, Copeland Tops & the World Heritage-listed Barrington Tops, all on our doorstep. We’re considered the gateway to all these amazing National Parks which is pretty special.

2. The roads in & around Gloucester are a favourite with car clubs & motorcyclists who can wind their way along country roads & take in the spectacular hills & valleys found throughout the Barrington Coast.

3. Cyclists flock here for the mountain & gravel tracks that abound & for the very popular Barrington Bike Park - a favourite with the adventure seekers! In the winter months the Barrington Tops Snow Chasers Group (yes, they are a thing) are on high alert for snowfall at the Tops & at those times, there’s a throng of visitors & a palpable excitement in the air!

4. There’s a number of very good local wineries which promise to be a fabulous way to fill a day with wine tastings & gorgeous scenery. We’re grateful to have local winery Faull’s Ridge supplying their local award-winning wines to us for the enjoyment of our guests.

5. Gloucester has a monthly Farmers Market, a wonderful art gallery, numerous cafes, two pubs & a legendary patisserie! The town is also home to Drifta which sees us welcoming people to town, who have travelled from all over the country, to hand over their vehicle for a Drifta fit-out.

6. If you’re visiting Gloucester from the South, The Farmers Wife Distillery is somewhere we always encourage our guests to stop-off for a delicious brunch, lunch, coffee or gin tasting. Kylie & the team have created an incredible space, complete with open fire, for travellers to enjoy.
